An Honest Intention hosted a get-together at the serene Arboretum Park on the 15th of September, 2013. The meeting, according to Gakii Biriri (Executive Director), was a success despite publicizing the event only a week prior on Twitter and Facebook. More than 40 members graced the Sunday occasion. The aim of the forum was to discuss the core values of AHI and find ways to further the efficiency and expand the non-profit organization. The core values discussed were integrity, leadership & innovation and continuous improvement. After a game and general introductions, the get-together saw people divided into groups to discuss these core values.
Under integrity, led by Judemark Bwari (Communications Director), the members agreed that the definition of integrity to be a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes. It was also defined as having the attributes of honesty, truthfulness and accuracy. This was said should be reflected in the staff working with and for the organization. Transparency and accountability within AHI was stressed by many members and suggested that the website should be a platform to ensure credibility. This would help ease the concern among donors for they would be able to know what their money is going into.
Under the Leadership and Innovation virtue, led by Gakii, it was stated that leadership is where a person can enlist the aid and support of others in order to accomplish a common task through the process of social influence. It is also considered the ability to organize a group of people in order to achieve a common goal. Innovation therefore is the application of new solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulate needs, or existing market needs. This is accomplished by the use of effective technologies, products, services, processes, or ideas that are readily available. There are three stages of innovation: idea generation, evaluation and implementation.
Members in the Leadership and Innovation group stressed on the need for suitable and innovative solutions to both generate and sustain an income for AHI. To increase teacher motivation that is lacking in the public school, it was suggested that a non-monetary reward system for teacher should be initiated. This could be through the awarding a teacher of the month and year and the winners photos put up within the school. The income generating projects should also involve the teachers and parents. Parents would benefit from participating in such projects in that their children’s school fees would be subsidized.
Under Continuous Improvement group, led by Nyathioma Njehu (Finance Director), it was defined as the process of ongoing efforts to improve processes, products or services. These processes are constantly evaluated and, in light of their effectiveness, efficiency and flexibility are being constantly improved. It was agreed that teachers need motivation in order attain the national goal for education. Teachers could have seminars and retreats to newly motivate them to teach students effectively. They could also receive awards and bonuses. AHI was encouraged to help decrease the books per student ratio at St. Catherine’s Primary School. The issue about nurturing talent in schools was also discussed and holding career days for students to help identify and strive toward a specific career from an early age.
Once the discussions were over, members came together to share the insight they had gained during the talks. The get-together came to a mellow close with member socializing and eating sandwiches that were available courtesy of AHI. The event was as the AHI official Facebook page said, ‘… was amazing, fun and extremely productive.’
